Transmission Oil Change for TRX450R
Tools Needed:
12mm socket
10mm socket
Ratchet
Funnel
Drain bucket
Tubing 1’ long 1/2” or 5/8” ID (optional).
Materials:
Oil of your choice
1) Start your R and let it run for 3-5 minutes.
2) Place drain bucket under your R.
3) Locate the Transmission drain bolt and remove it (12mm). NOTE: Oil is HOT!

4) Remove Oil fill plug.

5) The area under the fill plug is usually dirty. Take a clean paper towel and dip it in the old oil and wipe this area clean. The oil on the towel helps the particles around the opening to stick to the towel and not drop into the motor. You may also stick a paper towel down into the opening to prevent dirt from entering while cleaning. I also wash the fill plug, check bolt, and drain bolt thoroughly to remove any dirt.
6) I personally use a piece of tubing to blow into the motor to remove the last bit of oil after draining. This is optional but you would be surprised at the amount of oil remaining.

7) Once all the oil has drained reinstall the drain bolt and torque to 16 ft lbs. Be sure to clean the surface to allow the bolt to seat properly.

8) Remove the oil level check bolt. Clean the surface around the bolt to enable the bolt to seat properly when reinstalled. The Honda Service manual recommends changing the brass washer with every oil change. I have not changed mine yet and it does leak a little. I plan to order 10 or 12 to have on hand and probably change it with every other oil change. Honda part number: 90463-ML7-000.

9) Fill transmission with your oil of choice. The transmission is FULL when oil runs out the check bolt hole. Once oil begins to run out install the check bolt. I always add just a tiny bit more oil and then reinstall the fill plug.
I just began using Dumonde products and they have been recommended by many trusted sources. If you would like to purchase Dumonde products give Tyler from MSI Racing a call! Here is a link to his sponsor section on trx450r.org…drop him a post! http://www.trx450r.org/forum/index.php?showforum=58

Congratulations!!! You have now changed your transmission oil…please remember anytime you work on your R you run the risk of destroying it. Pay attention to what you are doing and try to avoid distractions. The most common problem is forgetting to fill with oil. Also remember more is not better. If you overfill the transmission it will end up in your air filter!
